Julia, I am sorry to hear this. I wish her a complete recovery and the best of health, best of health to you, and best of health to your other family members and all of your readers as well. Please take care of yourself as best as you can. I know that you want to be with her physically, but please remember that a child is always in a mother's heart. You are never really far away from her. And your own survival and health is most important to her. As to the staff treating her, I'm amazed that any of them are masking. UK's Telegraph newspaper devoted an entire article to mocking the "tiny minority" of people who still masks and socially isolates. That stupid, sneering attitude is one we all face daily. Let's hope your mom's doctors and nurses are wiser. Be well.
This is very hard. Years ago I also had to support a hospitalized parent from far away because I was too sick to travel. I'm sorry for the suffering that this is causing for both of you. Sending heartfelt wishes for all the best possible outcomes.
Wow, does that ever suck. Sincere wishes for your Mother's recovery, and as always for yours, too. The universe definitely owes you better times to come.
I'm so sorry. She sounds like an amazing person, and I hope she recovers well and recovers soon. Thanks for sharing this and so much else about your life with Long Covid.
Oh, Julia. I am so very sorry. This brings back memories of my mother’s hospitalization after a fall in January 2024. The lack of airborne infection prevention made the very stressful situation exponentially more fraught. It adds even more pain to be far away and unable to fly to her side. You aren’t alone. I understand. I have very much longed for a portal in my sick room so I could be with my people with no more difficulty than getting a glass of water. The soul ache from that is so, so heavy. You remain in my prayers, and I’ll pray for your family and especially your mother too. If we had that portal, I’d cross through and give you a gentle, masked hug and offer to sit with you a while. May you find comfort and grace in unexpected places to help you through this ordeal. Sending love and compassion from Texas
Julia, I've valued you as a human being and your writing so much. I'm deeply sorry to hear about your mother and will be thinking of you both as we enter 2026. My mom was in the hospital for 3.5 months this year (I read / re-read your articles while advocating for her) and your description of the ICU hits home. (My dad's a physician who worked at the hospital pre-2020 and we still struggled to improve hospital masking policy). But I do think the imperfect policy we ended up with helped my mother and I'm hoping for the same outcome for your mom. Please reach out if you need any extra support. I'm here for you. So are your readers in general.
I’m so sorry to hear this! Words are inadequate at times like this, but along with others here, I wish for a steady and complete recovery for you and your mother, as well as a much improved new year for you both. You so deserve it!
You and your mom deserve nothing but good and comfortable things in life. I am so sorry she's going through this. Ugh! I sincerely hope she improves and is able to go home soon. It's really nice that you're trying to help as much as you can despite your limitations. You can only do so much, and that is saintly of you. I'm glad your brother is there to help. Take care dear. You'll both be in my thoughts.
Oh no! I'm so sorry this happened to your mother, and right before Christmas too. It's lovely to hear that she has always encouraged your writing! She's clearly a very kind and supportive mom. I totally get how hard it is for you not to be able to visit her in person. It was so thoughtful and kind of you to raise awareness about infection control by having your brother put a sign on her door!
Sending lots of well wishes your way for your mom's recovery. My best wishes to you too, that your health may improve soon in 2026!
Julia!!!! Nooo! This sounds terrifying for you to be going through. I hope she makes a complete turnaround. I’m sending so much love and support!!!

I could hear the heartache in your writing this piece. Both of you will be in my thoughts as you navigate down this difficult path.
